Dear AAHSNN Members-Prospective Members-Friends

We pray that you, your family, your friends, and community are well and remain safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our mission is too important and the urgency of NOW is critical, especially because of the age of so many who are in possession of "those old memories, photos, artifacts, oral histories, etc."  WE MUST GET ENGAGED and STAY ENGAGED in spite of these difficult times. Our Board of Directors will be hosting our third virtual membership meeting and program on Saturday, November 21, 2020 from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.  PLEASE HOLD THE DATE and make plans to join and fellowship with your fellow members and friends.  This will be a ZOOM meeting.

AGENDA

  • Part I: BUSINESS MEETING 12:00 noon - 12:40 p.m.
  • Part II:Program (12:45 - 1:45 p.m.)

Wade in the Water: Exploring the History and Memories of William Ward Pinkett Sr. and Pinkett's Beach

Located on the east end of Newport News and overlooking the Hampton Roads waterfront, Pinkett's Beach has held an important place in the hearts and minds of generations of Black Families.  Since 1937, African Americans in the Hampton Roads area have flocked to Pinkett's Beach to worship, picnic, exercise, socialize, fish, and relax without the burden of racial oppression.  But, today, little is known about the beach's namesake William Ward Pinkett Sr. and the deep history of the location.  Members of the History and Research Committee of the African American Historical Society of Newport News will reveal the history behind William Ward Pinkett Sr. and his famous beach.

Cheers

Charde' Reid - researcher

Rev. Rodney Hunter - Chairman

We are excited to share one of our exclusive benefits of membership, a specially designed bookmark with our logo and your membership card created by artist S. Ross Browne the creator of the mural on the side of the Boys and Girls Club on Hampton Avenue in Newport News.

It's important to remember, during uncertain times like these, the value of family, friends and community telling our stories and recording our histories for the generations that follow has life changing potential.  We need you to do your part by helping the AAHSNN to educate and inspire an even wider audience so that ---"Sharing Yesterday's Stories, Empowering Today and Tomorrow's Generations will be possible!
